Pennythorn Hill

The walk up Pennythorn Hill rewards you with proper views across the Aire Valley - the kind of prospect that makes the climb worthwhile without being a slog. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but it does the job as a local foothill near Shipley, and on a clear day you'll spot the moorland rolling out toward Brontë country to the west.

This is where walkers based at Dobrudden or Moor Valley Country Park will head for a straightforward afternoon sortie. The terrain is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it unrewarding unless they're already keen on "getting to the top of things". The actual summit isn't much - no stone cairn or proper viewpoint structure - but the surrounding moorland and grassland have their own appeal if you're into that gently undulating Yorkshire landscape.

Allow a couple of hours return from wherever you park near Shipley. There's no visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of, so bring water and something decent to wear if the weather turns. West Yorkshire weather being what it is, that's fairly often.

It's the sort of walk that slots perfectly into a caravan park stay in the area. Not a destination in itself, but exactly the kind of thing you do when you've got accommodation sorted nearby and you're after some fresh air without travelling an hour to somewhere more famous. Worth the effort if you're staying locally - less so if you're making a special trip.
