Penn Wood - Wiltshire Wildlife Trust

The woodland around Penn Wood feels properly wild - ancient beech and oak towering overhead, with a carpet of bluebells in spring that stops you dead. It's a Wiltshire Wildlife Trust reserve just outside Calne, and the whole point here is to wander quietly and see what you spot rather than rush through ticking boxes.

You'll find woodland birds, deer if you're lucky, and the sort of peace that's genuinely hard to come by near towns. The trails wind through different habitats - some open glades, some dense woodland - so there's enough variety to hold your attention for a couple of hours. Families with younger kids will manage the easier sections fine, though there are steeper bits too. Dog walkers do well here as long as you keep control.

It's free to explore, which is brilliant. No visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water and dress for the weather. Spring and early summer are the best times - that's when you'll see most wildlife and the woodland floor is genuinely spectacular.

It's not a destination that needs hours of planning - more the sort of place you slip into between other bits of a park holiday.
