Pengover Park

The path down to Pengover Park opens up gradually, and you realise pretty quickly why locals keep this place to themselves. It's a proper nature reserve on the eastern edge of Looe - the sort of spot where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rarer than it should be in Cornwall these days.

The reserve itself is wetland, which means reeds, water, and birds. Lots of birds. Bring binoculars if you're serious about spotting them - herons, egrets, and various ducks potter about depending on the season. The walking trails are straightforward rather than challenging, so it works well for families who don't want to trek for hours, or birdwatchers who need to stay mobile. You're looking at maybe an hour or two here, depending on how much you stop.

Access is free, which is always a bonus. The ground can get boggy after rain, so proper shoes matter. There's no cafe, no visitor centre, just the park itself - bring a flask if you plan to settle in with your binoculars.

It slots nicely into a Looe-based holiday. Lydcott Glamping sits just 4.9 miles up the coast if you want something a bit upmarket, or there's the cluster of caravan parks near Tregoad and the Looe Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite closer to 5.4 miles away. The reserve works as a morning visit before heading into town for lunch or a beach afternoon. Not dramatic, but genuinely restful.
