Pen-Y-Wern Hill

The walk up Pen-Y-Wern Hill rewards you with views that stretch across the Shropshire Hills in one direction and down towards Craven Arms in the other. It's not a massive peak - nothing that'll leave you gasping for air - but it's a proper little climb with enough elevation to feel earned once you're up there. The hill itself is moorland and grassland, so you're exposed to the weather, which means on a clear day the visibility is excellent, and on a grey day it can feel rather bleak.

This is walker's territory, pure and simple. If you're after a steady hour-long ramble with decent views at the top, it delivers. Families with energetic kids will manage it without drama. History buffs get less out of this one than they might from some of Shropshire's other peaks, but anyone who simply wants to stretch their legs and feel like they've actually done something outdoors will be satisfied.

You'll want to allow a good hour to ninety minutes including the summit stop for a brew and a snack. There's no facilities at the top, so bring what you need. Being close to Craven Arms, it slots perfectly into a wider Shropshire Hills walking break - the nearby glamping options at Wild Valley, Black Hall Lodges and Offa's Pitch put you within striking distance of several similar walks in the area. Go on a clear day if you can. The mist up here makes it feel rather less than special.
