Pen-y-garfan

The walk up Pen-y-garfan near Tregaron takes you through proper moorland terrain - the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people are drawn to the Cambrian Mountains. It's not a massive peak by Welsh standards, but the views across Ceredigion are genuinely worth the leg-work, especially on a clear day when you can see for miles across the valleys.

The ascent is straightforward rather than punishing. You're looking at a couple of hours up and back, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath or take photos. The terrain underfoot is moorland grass and occasional rocky outcrops - nothing technical, but proper boots help. What makes it work is the isolation. You won't fight crowds here, which is refreshing if you've done the popular Snowdonia routes.

Walkers will get the most from this one. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey - there's moorland in most directions, so unless your lot are keen on unbroken views and fresh air for its own sake, they might get restless. History buffs won't find much up here beyond what the landscape itself offers.

If you're basing yourself at Cambrian Mountains Glamping and Camping just down the road, Pen-y-garfan makes for a solid morning or afternoon excursion. Combine it with exploring Tregaron itself - the village has character and decent food spots. Spring and autumn are ideal; summer can be busy, winter's fine if the weather plays along.
