Pen Moel-hedog

Standing at 449 metres above sea level, this grassy summit offers surprisingly expansive views across the Ceredigion countryside without the crowds you'd find on more famous Welsh peaks. The walk up from Llanybydder takes about 45 minutes through farmland and rough pasture - it's a proper hill walk that'll get the heart pumping.

Walkers who appreciate a bit of solitude will love this one. The summit itself is unmarked and unspectacular, just a grassy dome with a few rocky outcrops, but the 360-degree views more than compensate. On a clear day you can see right across to the Cambrian Mountains and down towards Carmarthen Bay.

Families with older children (say 10+) will manage the ascent fine, though it's not suitable for pushchairs and can be boggy after rain. Allow three hours return from the nearest parking spot. The route isn't waymarked, so decent map reading skills are essential.
