Allt Tan-fforest

The woodland around Allt Tan-fforest is proper Cardigan Valley stuff - dense, quiet, and the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a forest walk rather than a destination with facilities, so come prepared for uneven ground and the occasional muddy patch, especially after rain.

You're looking at a couple of hours maximum here, depending on how far you push into the trees. The main appeal is the peace of it all. Families with older kids will manage fine; toddlers might struggle on the rougher sections. If you're into birdwatching or just need to escape the caravan for a proper woodland amble, it's worth the drive from Llanybydder.

No visitor centre, no café, no entrance fee as far as I can tell - just park sensibly and go. Bring proper walking boots. The forest floor is unforgiving when wet, and there's not much signposting, so a map or GPS helps.

It works well as a half-day break if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Thistledown Glamping sits less than five miles away and gets consistently good reviews, as does The Hiveaway just over the valley. The Three Spaniels is another solid option if you've got a dog. All three give you comfortable beds and proper countryside, so you can actually justify a morning or afternoon in the forest without feeling like you've wasted precious holiday time. Not spectacular, but solid.
