Pen Hill

The walk up Pen Hill is straightforward enough - a steady climb through farmland on the edge of Carmarthen that rewards you with proper views across the Towy Valley. On a clear day you can see right across to the Black Mountains. It's not dramatic stuff, but it's genuine countryside without the crowds you'd get at more famous Welsh peaks.

The summit sits at 1,184 feet, so it's a decent yomp rather than a weekend stroll. Allow a couple of hours up and back depending on fitness and how long you fancy lingering at the top. The path is well-trodden and relatively clear, though it can get muddy after rain - nothing you wouldn't expect from a South Wales hill walk.

This works best for walkers who want to get away from the honeypots. History types might appreciate that you're walking through farming country that's changed hands for centuries, though there's not much interpretation on the ground. Young children could manage it with proper breaks, but they might find the views a bit underwhelming - it's not the sort of peak with a dramatically perched stone circle or dramatic drops.

If you're based at Woodland Rise Camping just 2.8 miles away, or one of the other parks scattered within a few miles of Carmarthen, Pen Hill makes an excellent morning out before heading into town for lunch. It's the sort of walk that makes you feel like you've earned a proper breakfast.
