Cefn Mystrych

The walk up Cefn Mystrych rewards you with proper views across Carmarthenshire - on a clear day you can see right across the valleys towards the Brecon Beacons. It's not a massive peak, but the approach is steep enough that you feel like you've earned the summit, and there's a real sense of isolation up there despite being only a few miles from Carmarthen.

The landscape around here is classic South Wales moorland - open grassland, rough scrub, and the occasional rocky outcrop. The actual walk itself takes about an hour if you're moderately fit, though the terrain can be boggy depending on the weather. Bring proper boots. On the way up you'll pass through patches of heather and gorse, and the air gets noticeably fresher as you climb.

This one's best for walkers who like a bit of a challenge without needing to commit to a full day expedition. Families with young children might find it frustrating - the gradient doesn't suit short legs, and there's not much to do once you've reached the top except enjoy the view and eat your sandwich. History buffs won't find much in the way of monuments or ruins, though the moorland itself has been shaped by centuries of farming and activity.
