Allt Pant-yr-haidd

The forest at Allt Pant-yr-haidd is proper Welsh woodland - all steep valleys, rushing water, and dense tree cover that makes you feel genuinely remote despite being barely twenty minutes from Carmarthen. Walk in here and you're away from it all, surrounded by the kind of dark green scenery that defines this corner of Carmarthenshire.

It's the sort of place walkers actually want to spend time in, not just pass through. The terrain is uneven enough to keep things interesting without being exhausting, and the stream running through the valley adds genuine atmosphere. You'll find yourself properly absorbed rather than checking your watch after half an hour. Bring proper boots though - muddy underfoot, especially after rain.

Families with young kids who can manage uneven ground will enjoy it, but it's not the type of forest with marked trails or interpretation boards. You need some navigation sense or a basic map. Allow a couple of hours for a decent wander rather than rushing through in thirty minutes.
