Pentre Hydd

The walk up Pentre Hydd, just a few miles north of Carmarthen, is straightforward enough - a proper hill rather than a proper mountain, but don't let that put you off. The summit sits at a decent height with views that spread across the Carmarthenshire countryside, rolling fields and distant ridges if you catch the day right. On a clear afternoon, you can see for miles.

It's the kind of walk that suits families who've graduated beyond the easy stuff but aren't quite ready for serious mountain territory. Older kids will manage it without complaint, and the round trip takes maybe ninety minutes to two hours depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. The path itself is well-trodden, muddy in places after rain, but nothing technical.

What makes it worth the effort is the quiet. You won't fight crowds here like you would at some of the honeypots further west. It's a genuine local's walk rather than a destination that gets plugged in every guidebook. The views justify the climb, though be honest with yourself - if you're after dramatic mountain scenery, you'll want to head higher into the Brecon Beacons.

Perfect as part of a wider park holiday in the area. Steffan Valley Caravan Park and Woodland Rise are both close enough that you could tackle this one morning and explore Carmarthen itself in the afternoon. Wear proper boots - it gets boggy underfoot - and aim for the morning to catch the light working in your favour.
