Ystrad Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured tourist attraction, Ystrad Wood sits just outside Carmarthen and gives you exactly what it says on the tin - trees, paths, and a bit of peace. The woodland itself isn't enormous, but it's dense enough that you genuinely feel removed from the everyday. You'll find a network of walking trails threading through mature woodland with the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to rural Wales in the first place.

It's ideal for families with older kids or anyone after a straightforward forest walk without the crowds. You won't need more than an hour or ninety minutes here unless you're dawdling, and there's nothing slick or overtouristed about it. The ground can be boggy depending on the season, so proper footwear matters. Free to access, no visitor centre or facilities to speak of.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Church House Farm Getaways is closest at just over two miles, or Steffan Valley if you want something slightly further out - Ystrad Wood makes a decent morning activity before heading into Carmarthen proper. It's not a reason to plan a week around, but combined with the River Towy walks and whatever else the area offers, it's worth the detour. The woodland has genuine character rather than being a generic nature reserve, which counts for something.
