Pen Gallt-y-llyn

The walk up Pen Gallt-y-llyn from the Caernarfon side is proper steep, but it rewards you with views that stretch across to Snowdon and down into the valleys below. It's not a massive peak - you're looking at a couple of hours up and down if you're moderately fit - but the scramble at the top has real character. The ridge walk is where it gets interesting, with drops either side that make you pay attention without being genuinely dangerous.

This is really one for walkers with some experience. You won't get small kids up here easily, and the ground gets loose underfoot in places. It's also a solitary climb - you won't find crowds or facilities at the summit, which means you need to come prepared with water and a map. Wear proper boots.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Llyn Gwynant or Beddgelert are closest at just a couple of miles away - it makes an excellent half-day expedition. You could combine it with a walk around Beddgelert itself or tackle the Snowdon ridges on another day. The weather matters here more than at lower elevations, so check conditions before you set off.

Worth doing if you're already in the area and fancy something with a bit more bite than a gentle valley stroll. It's free, obviously - just park sensibly near the foot of the path and go.
