Peel Park & The Coppice

The Coppice at Peel Park is a proper woodland walk that catches you off guard with how decent it is, especially if you're based near Clitheroe. You're wandering through mixed woodland - oak, beech, the lot - with a small stream running through, and suddenly you understand why locals keep coming back.

It's not vast. You can do the main loop in under an hour, which suits families with younger kids who'll get tired of trees after a bit. The ground can be boggy in patches, so sensible footwear matters. Walkers will appreciate the varied terrain, and there's enough naturalist interest - birds, native trees, seasonal changes - to keep the eyes engaged without needing to be a trained botanist.

The appeal sits in its simplicity. No visitor centre frills, no entry fees, just a woodland that's been left to do its thing. Worth a half-morning while you're staying at one of the local holiday parks - Pendle View is excellent value if you're planning to base yourself properly in the area. It pairs well with walks around Clitheroe itself; do Peel Park on a quieter day when you want something undemanding.

Go when it's been dry enough that the paths aren't a nightmare. Spring's decent for bluebells, autumn for the light through the canopy. Don't expect anything spectacular or Instagram-worthy. Expect instead a genuine bit of Lancashire woodland where you can actually hear yourself think.
