Peace Monument

The Peace Monument stands on a hillside above Fort William, a granite obelisk that catches you off guard when you round the bend. It's not flashy - just a simple column erected after the First World War to commemorate the end of fighting. The walk up takes about twenty minutes from the car park, and it's worth doing for the views alone. Fort William sprawls below, Loch Linnhe gleaming beyond, Ben Nevis looming to the northeast. On a clear day you can see for miles.

This is the sort of place that appeals to walkers and history types rather than anyone expecting a major attraction. It's genuinely quiet - you might find yourself entirely alone up there, which is part of its charm. The monument itself is modest but dignified, the kind of thing you'll want to stand in front of for five minutes and actually think about rather than snap a photo and leave.

If you're staying at Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park or Ben Nevis Holiday Park nearby, it's an easy half-hour expedition that breaks up a day nicely without demanding much. Families with young kids might find the walk a bit dull unless they're keen hikers - there's not much to do once you arrive except admire the view. The grass can be boggy after rain, so proper boots are advisable. Free to visit, no facilities at the site itself. Best in late afternoon when the light catches the stone properly.
