West Highland Museum

Fort William's West Highland Museum sits on the high street, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper afternoon. The collection tells the story of the Highlands from the '45 Rebellion onwards, with genuine artefacts that actually make you understand why this corner of Scotland mattered so much. There's a secret portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie hidden inside a polished wooden ball - you have to look through a special lens to see his face. It sounds gimmicky on paper, but standing there squinting at it, you get why people had to hide things.

The military uniforms, weapons, and personal objects from clansmen give the place real weight. This isn't a grand sweeping museum - it's intimate and a bit old-fashioned, which is entirely its charm. You can work through the whole thing in about two hours without rushing, or spend longer if you're properly into Highland history. Admission is free, which makes it a genuine bargain on a rainy day.

It works brilliantly if you're camped at Glen Nevis or Ben Nevis Holiday Park - both are walking distance away. Families with older kids (say, eight upwards) will find enough here to engage them, though younger ones might fidget. Walkers fresh off Ben Nevis itself will appreciate the context of what they've just climbed through. Winter hours are limited, so check ahead if you're visiting between January and April. Come morning or early afternoon in summer - it gets surprisingly busy with tour groups by mid-afternoon.
