Cameron Obelisk

Rising from the Highland landscape near Fort William, the Cameron Obelisk stands as a rather austere monument to the Jacobite cause. It's a straightforward stone pillar - nothing ornate, nothing that screams for attention - but the history wrapped around it carries considerable weight.

The obelisk commemorates the Cameron clan's involvement in the Jacobite risings, particularly the '45. Walking up to it gives you a proper sense of the terrain these folk navigated, and on a clear day the views across the glens are genuinely worth the trip alone. The monument itself takes about ten minutes to see properly, though history buffs will want to linger and absorb the weight of it all.

This works brilliantly as a half-hour diversion if you're staying at Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park or Ben Nevis Holiday Park - both are within spitting distance. It slots neatly into a broader Highland tour alongside walks up Ben Nevis itself, rather than being a destination you'd plan your entire holiday around. Families with older kids and serious walkers will get the most from it; younger children might find it a bit static.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though conditions underfoot can be boggy depending on the season. Spring through autumn is your best bet. Wear decent boots and allow an extra quarter-hour if the ground's wet. The Linnhe Lochside option is slightly further but puts you between the obelisk and some cracking coastal scenery.
