Càrn Dearg

The walk up Càrn Dearg rewards you with proper views across the Ben Nevis range - assuming the cloud lifts, which isn't guaranteed in these parts. It's a straightforward hill rather than a technical scramble, making it accessible for anyone with decent legs and a few hours to spare. From Fort William, you're looking at a couple of hours' drive to get onto the hill itself, though Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park sits just 2.4 miles away if you're based there.

The peak itself isn't particularly high - around 940 metres - but the approach has character. The walk takes you through moorland and past lochs, and on a clear day you'll see right across to the Mamores. On a grey day, which is more likely, you'll see about fifty metres in front of you and curse the weather. Both experiences are fairly typical for the Highlands.

Historically types will find the landscape itself interesting - these hills hold centuries of Scottish mountain culture. For families, it's doable if your kids are decent walkers and you don't mind turning back if energy flags. It's free, naturally, as you're just climbing a mountain.

There's no café at the top or visitor facility, so bring what you need. Allow three to four hours for the round trip if you're taking your time. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Ben Nevis Holiday Park is 4.3 miles out - it makes a solid day's outing when the weather cooperates. It's worth doing once, though it's not the showstopper some people expect.
