The eastern edge of Hull opens up into something you won't expect in this industrial corner of Yorkshire - a proper wild space where the Humber estuary sprawls out in mudflats and salt marsh. Paull Holme Strays is less manicured nature reserve, more rough-around-the-edges wetland that rewards a slow wander.

Birdwatchers will get the most from a visit here. Winter brings waders and wildfowl in serious numbers - redshank, oystercatcher, pintail - while spring migration gets genuinely interesting if you know what you're looking for. Even casual visitors will spot something: the light catches the water differently out here, and there's a real sense of being at the edge of things.

The walk itself isn't demanding but can be muddy underfoot, particularly after rain. Allow an hour to two hours depending on how much time you spend scanning the horizon with binoculars. There's something meditative about it, even if you're not ticking off species.

It's not going to rival the drama of the North York Moors, but as a way to understand what's actually out here geographically, it works.
