Burstwick Hall Garth (castel)

What remains of Burstwick Hall is essentially a grass-covered mound in the East Yorkshire countryside - the earthwork outline of a medieval castle that's been here for nearly a thousand years. It's not dramatic, and honestly, if you're expecting stonework or towers, you'll be disappointed. What you get instead is a genuine archaeological site where you can actually walk the boundary of the fortifications and imagine the defensive structure that once stood here.

The site itself is free to visit and requires minimal time - twenty minutes to half an hour if you're properly poking around. It appeals most to local history buffs and anyone doing a serious tour of Yorkshire's medieval earthworks. Kids might manage ten minutes before getting restless, unless they're genuinely into archaeology. The location between Hull and the surrounding parks makes it a reasonable half-hour diversion if you're based at Spring Valley Campsite or Burton Constable Holiday Park.

Timing isn't critical since there's no gate or formal hours - you can visit whenever. Spring and autumn are best for visibility; overgrown summer grass obscures the layout. The site sits on open land, so dress for exposed conditions. It's worth a stop if you're exploring the broader East Yorkshire landscape, but don't treat it as a standalone destination. Combine it with Burton Constable itself, which is only a couple of miles away and offers far more visual reward.
