Eastmount & Longhill Playing Fields

You'll find yourself on the edge of Hull, in a corner of East Yorkshire where the playing fields open out into something more interesting than you'd expect. Eastmount and Longhill isn't a manicured nature reserve with visitor centres and marked trails - it's working land that's been left to do what it does, and that's rather the appeal.

The reserve attracts serious birdwatchers and botanists. Lapwings nest here, redshanks move through seasonally, and the grassland supports plants you won't see in managed parks. If you're the type who carries binoculars on holiday, you'll want to come. Families with young children might find it a bit unstructured - there's no play equipment or obvious focal points, just open space and the chance to see what's actually about if you're quiet and patient.

Walking access appears straightforward from what I can gather, though opening times aren't clearly advertised online, so ringing ahead before you visit would be wise. Allow an hour to properly explore, longer if you're doing proper wildlife spotting.

The location works well if you're staying at Burton Constable Holiday Park or Spring Valley Campsite - both are barely twenty minutes away. You could combine this with the arboretum at Burton Constable itself for a full day of outdoor activity without the tourist crowd. It's not dramatic, but it's genuine, and that counts for something.
