Pauline's Swamp

Pauline's Swamp sits on the fringes of Cambridge, a proper wetland reserve that feels a world away from the colleges and punts. It's exactly what the name suggests - boggy, reedy, alive with water birds and the kind of plants that have adapted to life in soggy ground. Bring binoculars if you're serious about spotting, though honestly you'll see plenty without them: great crested grebes, reed warblers, and if you're lucky, a water vole slipping through the margins.

This is fundamentally a spot for birdwatchers and nature types rather than casual strollers. The paths are basic - sometimes muddy, sometimes just wet - and there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of. You're here to watch wildlife, not for comfort. That said, it's free to access and takes about an hour to walk the perimeter, longer if you're stopping constantly with a camera.

The best time is late spring through summer when breeding birds are active and the reeds are tall enough to hide things properly. Winter's quieter but less muddy. If you're based at one of the glamping sites near Cambridge - Lodeside or Fen Meadows are both within easy reach - this makes a good morning outing before heading into the city. It's not flashy. There's no café, no viewing tower, no gift shop. But if you want to see actual wild Cambridge, not the tourist version, Pauline's Swamp does exactly what it says.
