Burwell Castle

A grassy mound with a keep-shaped earthwork rising from the fenland - that's Burwell Castle in a nutshell. It's less dramatic than Cambridgeshire's other Norman sites, but there's something rather affecting about standing on this 11th-century fortification and seeing how it once commanded the landscape between Cambridge and the Fens.

You won't find much to excavate here. The castle's mostly a raised bank and ditch system now, the stonework long gone. But that's precisely why it works: no crowds, no gift shop, just you, the mound, and the fen breeze. History types will appreciate what it represents - a practical defensive position from when the Normans were consolidating power across East Anglia. Children aged seven upwards might manage the short walk and appreciate the open views, though there's no playground or facilities.

The site's free and accessible year-round, though there's nowhere to park directly at the castle itself. You'll need to leave your car in Burwell village and walk through farmland - maybe twenty minutes on foot. It's not a destination that demands hours; thirty minutes covering the mound and taking in the vista is realistic.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby glamping parks - Lodeside or Fen Meadows are both within striking distance of Cambridge - Burwell Castle works as a low-key morning excursion. Pair it with a punt on the Cam or a wander through the college gardens, and you've got a proper Cambridgeshire day sorted. Worth the detour for keen historians; skip it if you need dramatic ruins.
