Parwich Hill

Climbing 300 metres above the surrounding White Peak countryside, this limestone hill offers surprisingly good views for relatively little effort. The walk up takes about 45 minutes from Parwich village, following well-marked footpaths through traditional Derbyshire drystone wall country.

From the top, you'll see across to Tissington and the Manifold Valley - proper Peak District panorama stuff without the crowds that swamp Kinder Scout or Bleaklow. The summit itself isn't dramatic, more of a grassy dome really, but on a clear day you can pick out the distinctive outline of Chrome Hill to the northwest.

Walkers will appreciate the decent workout without needing serious hiking gear. Families with older children (say 10+) should manage it fine, though the climb is steady enough to get the heart pumping. The paths can get muddy after rain, so decent boots help.

Being just south of Matlock, it makes a good afternoon stretch if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Callow Top or Ashbourne Heights. The village of Parwich itself has a decent pub for post-walk refreshment - The Sycamore Inn does a proper ploughman's lunch. Allow three hours for the full circuit including stops, or you can drive partway up the lane to cut the walking time in half.
