Partrishow Hill

The walk up Partrishow Hill rewards you with proper views across the Golden Valley and into Wales beyond - assuming the weather plays ball. It's not a peak that demands technical skill, but it is a genuine climb, and the final stretch gets steeper than you'd expect from the map.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. The paths are clear enough once you're on them, though navigation can be a bit fiddly getting out of Hereford itself. The actual summit is modest - no dramatic cairn or trig point - but that's rather the point. You get there for the landscape, not the landmark. On a clear day, the patchwork of fields and the distant Welsh hills make the effort worthwhile. Families with young children might find the gradient tiresome on the way down, so come prepared for that.

Allow two to three hours depending on your pace and where you start from. The nearest town is Hereford, which is about five miles away - a bit of a drive followed by a walk, rather than something you'd tackle on foot from the town centre itself.

If you're camping locally - Cwmdu, Grove Farm, or Olchon Valley are all within spitting distance - Partrishow works well as a half-day venture. It's the sort of walk that feels properly rural without being wildly remote. Not a show-stopper, but solid hill-walking without the drama.
