Tal-y-Sarn, Mound

A Bronze Age mound rising from the Powys countryside - that's what you're looking at with Tal-y-Sarn. It's an earthwork that's been here for over three thousand years, and while it won't blow your mind with dramatic ruins or museum displays, there's something genuinely moving about standing on something that ancient.

The mound itself is low-key archaeology. You won't find information boards or visitor facilities - this is the real thing, untouched and barely interpreted. It's the sort of place that appeals to serious history types and landscape archaeologists rather than casual day-trippers. If you're into Bronze Age settlement patterns or just want to walk where Iron Age people once walked, it's worth the effort to find. The Hereford area has genuine character, and this site fits into the wider story of early Welsh settlement.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted - you can visit whenever you fancy. Allow maybe thirty minutes unless you're genuinely researching the site. The real value comes if you're already camping in the area. Olchon Valley Campsite and Chapel House Farm Campsite are both within striking distance, making this a natural addition to a Powys walking holiday rather than a destination in itself.

Be honest with yourself though: this isn't Stonehenge. There's no drama, no visitor centre, no café. What you get is solitude and the genuine article - a piece of Wales that hasn't been tidied up for tourists. That's either brilliant or a bit of a letdown, depending on what you're after.
