Parsonage Wood

Parsonage Wood sits just outside Maldon, a proper slice of Essex woodland that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a quiet walk. It's the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of traffic - tall trees, decent paths, and enough space to feel properly away from things without needing to trek for hours.

What you get here is straightforward: forest walks through mixed woodland, decent enough for stretching your legs but nothing that'll blow your mind if you're coming from somewhere like the New Forest. The paths are manageable, though it gets muddy after rain. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no faffing about - just trees and peace. That's either brilliant or pointless depending on what you're after.

Walkers and anyone needing a break from the caravan will find it useful. It's the sort of place you do for an hour or so, not a full afternoon. Kids won't find it thrilling unless they're the foraging, bug-hunting type - there's no playground or obvious attractions.

Free to access, no charges that I'm aware of. Best visited in autumn when the light filters through properly, or spring if you want the woodland floor covered in bluebells.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Steeple Bay or Osea Leisure? Parsonage Wood makes a decent morning walk to break up the holiday routine. It's close enough to Maldon to pair with a proper explore of the town itself - the high street's got character and the waterfront's worth an hour.
