Parrock Hill

The walk up Parrock Hill from Settle takes about an hour, and it's steep enough that you'll feel your legs working but short enough that even reluctant hikers won't complain too much. What makes it worthwhile is the view across Ribblesdale - proper Yorkshire fell country stretching out in all directions, with the limestone landscape looking especially dramatic when clouds are rolling in.

You get limestone cliffs, open moorland, and on a clear day you can see for miles. It's the sort of walk that rewards you with a genuine sense of achievement without eating up your whole morning. The summit itself is modest - not a dramatic peak, just a high point with decent 360-degree views. Families with kids aged eight upwards will manage it fine; younger ones might find the climb tedious.

This is proper walking territory rather than a gentle stroll, so you'll want decent boots and should check the weather. Allow two to three hours for the round trip if you want time to stand around and soak it in. There's nothing at the top - no cafe, no facilities - so bring water and a snack.

If you're staying at Ribblesdale Pods nearby, this makes an excellent morning mission before settling back to the glamping site for the afternoon. It's the kind of walk that works best when the light's good, so aim for midday rather than late afternoon. Free to access, naturally.
