Parkhouse Hill North Top

Two limestone towers rise dramatically from the moorland near Newtown, and Parkhouse Hill North Top is the slightly higher of this remarkable pair. The scramble to the summit requires proper walking boots and a head for heights - loose rock and steep sections make this unsuitable for casual strollers or young children.

From the car park near Chrome Hill, the approach takes about 45 minutes across boggy ground before the real climb begins. The final push involves some proper scrambling, using hands as well as feet on the fractured limestone. Views from the top stretch across the White Peak to Kinder Scout on clear days.

This is one for keen walkers and scramblers rather than families looking for an easy afternoon out. The neighbouring Chrome Hill offers a slightly easier alternative if the North Top looks too daunting. Both hills reward the effort with spectacular panoramas, though weather can change quickly up here.

Allow three hours for the round trip from the parking area. Early morning visits often provide the clearest views before afternoon clouds roll in. Several holiday parks dot the area including Peak Glamping Hideaway and Longnor Wood Holiday Park, making this a cracking addition to a Peak District break for those who fancy a proper hill walk.
