The nature reserve sprawls across Gwynedd's coastline just outside Pwllheli, offering proper coastal walking through salt marsh and dune systems that actually feel wilder than you'd expect this close to town. You'll find yourself on paths that wind through habitats where wading birds congregate in the shallows and the air tastes of salt and seaweed.

What makes it work is the sheer variety compressed into a relatively small area. Dunes give way to grassland, then to water - each zone supports different species, so even a half-hour stroll turns up something worth noting. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; bring cameras regardless. The light across the estuary at late afternoon is genuinely something.

This is best suited to walkers who enjoy identification guides and people willing to move slowly. Kids under eight might find it a bit samey, though older ones with a specific interest - birds, plants, insects - will get properly absorbed. You're not here for amusement; you're here to understand coastal ecology.

Allow two to three hours for a proper visit if you're taking photographs or doing a full circuit. There's no need to book ahead or pay entry from what we can find. Timing matters though - visit at low tide for better access to mudflats, and early morning when wildlife is most active.

It pairs well with base camping at Hafan y Môr Holiday Park just up the road, or any of the caravan sites within three miles. Use it as your morning walk before heading into Pwllheli for lunch. It's quiet, unglamorous, and exactly the sort of place that sticks with you afterwards.
