Beudy-mawr Wood

Walking into Beudy-mawr Wood feels like stepping back into something proper quiet. This patch of mixed woodland just outside Pwllheli spreads across enough ground to lose a couple of hours, though it won't test serious hikers. The trees here are a decent mix - oak, birch, and conifers creating that dappled light you actually want on a Welsh afternoon rather than relentless drizzle.

It's the sort of place that works well for families who want a woodland walk without the fell-slogging commitment. Kids won't get bored for a solid hour, and the uneven ground keeps things slightly more interesting than a park path. There are proper woodland sounds here - birds doing their thing, the occasional scramble of something small through the undergrowth. In autumn the leaf cover is thick enough to make it feel genuinely separated from the holiday park crowds you'll find over at Hafan y Môr just down the road.

Free access and no particular opening hours mean you can slip in whenever suits. Bring decent boots though, as it gets muddy after rain, which in North Wales is basically always. The walk takes between an hour and ninety minutes depending on how many wrong turns you take and how long you spend just standing about listening to it all.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks for the week, this beats another afternoon at the beach. It's close enough to Pwllheli that you're not burning half a day on the drive, but far enough into the trees to feel like proper Wales rather than holiday resort Wales.
