Parc Glynllifon

The old slate quarry at Parc Glynllifon is one of those places that sneaks up on you. You're driving through the lanes near Caernarfon, and suddenly there's this vast industrial landscape - rusted machinery, towering rock faces, abandoned buildings - all slowly being reclaimed by nature. It's genuinely striking, especially if you've only just arrived in North Wales and haven't yet grasped quite how recently the region's economy was built on extracting stone from the ground.

What you're actually looking at is a working piece of Welsh industrial heritage. The site tells you something real about how people lived and worked here, rather than dressing it up. There are the remnants of the quarrying operation itself - the scale of it hits you when you realize how much rock was hauled out of that hole - alongside some restored buildings and occasional exhibitions that explain what went on. It's not theme-park Wales; it's the actual thing.

Walkers and industrial history enthusiasts will get the most from it. Kids might find the first twenty minutes interesting, but it's not a day-long proposition unless they're genuinely into how things work. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it seriously. The site sits nicely within reach of the holiday parks dotted around - Dinlle is barely a mile away, making it a sensible morning or afternoon visit if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby.

Caernarfon itself is close enough for a combined trip - tackle the castle, then head out here to see what the town was actually built on.
