Forestry College

Walking through the Forestry College near Caernarfon feels like stepping into proper working woodland rather than a polished nature reserve. This is a functional landscape - you'll see managed forestry alongside native habitat, which gives it a different character than many of Wales's more touristy nature spots.

The trails wind through mixed woodland with decent views toward Snowdonia if you pick the right route. It's the kind of place where you might actually see something - red squirrels, various birds, and the occasional roe deer if you're quiet. The ground can be muddy in winter, so come prepared for that.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the working aspect - this isn't just preserved in amber, it's a living forest college where management happens. Families with kids aged seven upwards will find enough to keep them occupied for a couple of hours. Younger children might get restless unless they're proper nature kids.

Access details are thin on the ground, so phone ahead or check the Caernarfon visitor centre before driving out. The nearby caravan parks - Dinlle, Morfa Lodge, and Talymignedd - sit within easy reach if you're basing yourself there for a week.

Best visited in spring or early autumn when the woodland is active but not sweltering. Midwinter can feel bleak and boggy. Worth the detour if you're already exploring the Caernarfon area, but don't go out of your way expecting theme park attractions.
