About Pancake Stone
It's a natural rock formation, layered and fractured in a way that makes the nickname stick immediately. You can walk right up to it, touch it, circle it. The stone itself is unremarkable in colour - just grey gritstone - but the geometry of those stacked sheets is what arrests you. It takes maybe ten minutes to see properly, photograph it from a few angles, and move on.
Walkers will get the most from this one. It works as a stopping point on a longer moorland ramble rather than a destination in itself. The real appeal is the walk out to it across proper open country, not the stone alone. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Clarion Lodge Campsite, Crook Farm Park, or Olicana Park are all within a few miles - it makes a decent half-hour detour on an afternoon walk.
Free to visit, no facilities, no set hours. Go whenever suits. Don't expect the earth to move, but if you're already out on the moors, it's worth the slight diversion. Kids get bored quickly though, so save it for when you've got a proper walk planned.
