Palley's Crags

The walk up Palley's Crags rewards you with proper moorland views that stretch across North Yorkshire without the crowds you'd find at better-known peaks. It's a straightforward climb from near Harrogate - nothing technical, just a steady pull uphill through rough grass and heather, taking the best part of an hour depending on pace and fitness.

What you get at the top is genuine solitude. The crag itself forms a natural viewpoint, with the landscape rolling away below you in all directions. On a clear day it's worth the effort. On a grey one - and this is Yorkshire, so grey is likely - you're still looking at decent moorland atmosphere and a real sense of being away from it all.

It's a walker's stop rather than a destination you'd spend hours at. Bring a map, check the weather, allow two hours return. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the distance and terrain.

If you're camping at Breaks Fold Farm Glamping just 2.5 miles away, or staying at one of the other sites dotted around the area, Palley's Crags works as a half-day outing that breaks up a holiday nicely. Don't expect facilities at the top - there's nothing there. Park near Harrogate and walk from the access point. Worth doing once if you're in the area.
