Outlander film location (Craigh na Dun)

The stone circle that launched a thousand obsessions sits on a hillside near Pitlochry, and yes, it's the one from Outlander. You'll recognise it instantly if you've watched the show - that's rather the point. The circle itself is modest: just a handful of stones arranged in a rough ring on open moorland, with proper views across Perthshire rolling out beneath you.

It's a straightforward walk to reach it, nothing arduous, though the final approach can be boggy depending on the weather. Allow forty minutes from the car park. The real draw here isn't the archaeology - this is a modern recreation, built for the filming - but the sheer pull of the TV connection. Outlander fans will find it genuinely moving to stand where Claire and Frank's story unfolds on screen. Everyone else might spend twenty minutes looking around and wondering what the fuss is about.

Walk it on a clear day. The views matter more than the stones themselves, and low cloud turns the whole thing rather forgettable. It's free and unmanaged, which is refreshing - no visitor centre, no café, no entrance fee. That also means no facilities, so bring water.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Parkdean Resorts Tummel Valley is closest at 3.4 miles - it's worth fitting in as a short detour rather than a main event. Combine it with a proper walk in the Tummel Valley itself, or a visit to Pitlochry proper. On its own, Craigh na Dun doesn't justify a special trip.
