Càrn Mairg

The walk up Càrn Mairg from Pitlochry takes you into proper hill country - moorland, crag, and views that stretch all the way to the Cairngorms on a clear day. It's not technically difficult, but it's steep enough to earn your vistas. The path climbs through heather and rough grass, gaining roughly 600 metres, and the summit cairn sits at 941 metres overlooking some of Perthshire's finest terrain.

Expect it to take three to four hours round trip depending on your pace. This is a walk for people who actually like walking - not a casual stroll. If you're staying at Tighnavon Glamping Pods or Glengoulandie Camping just down the road, it's the obvious choice for a proper day out. Families with older kids who don't mind a slog will get something real from this; younger ones might struggle with the relentless ascent.

Start early. The weather changes fast up here, and afternoon mist can roll in and steal the whole point of the exercise. Spring and autumn are when you'll get the clearest air, though summer works fine if you go midweek to avoid the crowds. There's no visitor centre, no café, nothing - just the hill and what you bring with you.

Parking is at the Glen Lyon trailhead near Pitlochry. The walk itself is free, obviously. It's one of those hills that demands respect but gives back proper rewards if you turn up prepared.
