Craig Varr

The walk up Craig Varr from Pitlochry is steep enough to make your legs remember it, but the payoff is a proper viewpoint that sweeps across the Tummel Valley below. On a clear day you're looking at layer upon layer of Perthshire hills rolling away into the distance - genuinely worth stopping to catch your breath for.

It's not a massive undertaking. Most walkers will manage the ascent in under an hour, though you'll want to factor in time to sit about at the top and actually look at the view rather than just ticking it off. The path is well-trodden and reasonably clear, though it does get boggy in places after rain, so decent boots are worth the bother.

Families with older kids will find it manageable, though younger ones might find the gradient tedious. History types won't get much from it - this is pure landscape appreciation, nothing more. The real appeal is to walkers who like to earn their vistas.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Tighnavon Glamping Pods is practically on your doorstep - Craig Varr makes a solid half-day outing. Parkdean Resorts Tummel Valley Holiday Park, a bit further south, is well-positioned for combining it with other walks in the area. Go early in the day if you can. The Pitlochry crowds often thin out come mid-afternoon, and that's when the light on the valley works best.
