Outberry Plain

Outberry Plain sits on the moorland fringes south of Bishop Auckland, a modest fell that rewards walkers with proper views across County Durham's dales. It's not a dramatic summit - the height won't impress seasoned Pennine trekkers - but the moorland walk up is pleasant enough, especially if you catch it on a clear day when you can pick out the rolling landscape stretching away to the south.

This is one for serious hill-baggers rather than casual strollers. The approach involves moorland terrain that can be boggy after rain, so proper boots are essential. Allow a couple of hours to make a decent circuit and soak in whatever the weather allows. There's no visitor centre, cafe or facilities at the top - just you, the wind, and the view.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit relentless; it's the sort of walk that works better for teenagers or adults who actually enjoy the climb for its own sake. The nearby caravan parks at Westgate and White House & Hagg Bridge are both within four miles, making Outberry Plain a sensible add-on to a wider exploration of the Durham Dales. Combine it with walks around Weardale or through the valleys closer to Stanhope if you're staying at any of the Leekworth or Belle Vue Farm sites.

Best tackled on a dry day when visibility is reasonable. Wind can be sharp up here even in summer.
