Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church

The twin spires of Our Lady of the Assumption rise unexpectedly above the Victorian terraces of Swansea's West End, a proper statement of faith in what was once a thriving industrial city. Inside, the church reveals itself as a serious piece of 19th-century Catholic architecture - all soaring ceilings, stained glass, and that particular smell of old stone and candle wax that makes you drop your voice without thinking about it.

It's worth a visit if you're interested in religious architecture or Swansea's social history. The Victorians didn't do churches by halves, and this one shows what money and conviction looked like when they were aligned. You'll spend maybe thirty minutes looking round properly - longer if you're the type to sit in the pews and take it in. The stained glass alone justifies the walk.
