Our Lady of Lourdes & St Peter Chanel

You'll find this red-brick Victorian church tucked away on Beckside in Beverley, a town that's quietly become one of Yorkshire's more underrated stops. Our Lady of Lourdes and St Peter Chanel is proper late-19th century - the sort of place where you can actually feel the age in the stonework and stained glass.

The interior's the real draw. High ceilings, decent religious art, and that particular hush you only get in old churches where generations have come to pray. It's Roman Catholic, which if you're interested in how the faith survived and rebuilt itself in England post-Reformation, makes it worth thirty minutes of your time. The craftsmanship in the windows alone justifies the walk.

Unlike many parish churches, this one's less about tourists and more about locals actually using it, which gives it an honest feel - no pretence, no gift shop. Free entry, naturally. Best visited mid-week when you won't be bumping into services.

Beverley itself is the real star though - the Minster across town is genuinely one of England's finest churches, and the Georgian town centre warrants a proper mooch. If you're camping nearby - Manor Farm is only three miles out - spend your morning here, then head into Beverley proper for lunch. Pair it with Butt Farm if you want glamping that doesn't feel like roughing it. The church is a solid half-hour diversion rather than a destination in itself, but that's what makes it genuine.
