Ostrich- Whipsnade Zoo

The ostriches at Whipsnade Zoo are exactly what you'd expect from one of the UK's best collections of African birds - tall, ridiculous, and absolutely mesmerising when they get going. These aren't docile creatures tucked away in a corner; they're front and centre in the open enclosures, so you'll see them properly striding about, pecking at the ground, or doing that distinctive head-bobbing thing they do when they're worked up.

Whipsnade itself is a sprawling open-air zoo set across parkland near Dunstable, so the ostriches are part of a much larger day out rather than a standalone attraction. You're looking at a proper wildlife park experience here - giraffes, rhinos, big cats, the lot. The ostriches work brilliantly for families because children get genuinely excited by them, and they're tall enough that even the smallest visitors can spot them from a distance.

Allow at least three to four hours if you're doing the zoo properly, though you could easily spend a full day. It's the kind of place where you'll lose track of time wandering between enclosures. Spring and early autumn are best - the animals are more active in cooler weather, and crowds are thinner than summer.

If you're staying at Fuzzy's Farm nearby, Whipsnade makes an excellent day trip that breaks up a park holiday nicely. Entry isn't free, but annual passes often work out cheaper if you're the type to return.
