The small stone church sits quietly on the edge of Crickhowell, easy to miss if you're whizzing through town on the main road. St Michael Archangel is genuinely old - medieval foundations, though it's been worked on and rebuilt plenty of times since then. Step inside and you get that particular hush that proper old churches have, with enough worn stonework and dark wood to feel authentic rather than sanitised.

It's not a showstopper like some cathedral or a grand pilgrimage site. What you're looking at is a working local church that's been part of this community for centuries. The real appeal is architectural detail - carved bits, odd stone placements, the gradual layers of how people added and fixed things over 500 years. History types will spend half an hour easily; families with restless kids might manage ten minutes before needing fresh air.

Crickhowell itself is a decent market town with good pubs and a decent high street, so visiting the church works well as part of a morning wander rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at Cwmdu Campsite just down the road, it's absolutely worth the five-minute stroll into town to see it. The surrounding countryside is the real draw - Powys is proper hill-walking country, and the church sits within easy reach of some solid rambles through the Brecon Beacons.
