The light hits the work properly in this converted chapel space just outside Tregaron, which is really the only reason to stop here at all. Oriel Jays Gallery punches above its weight for a small-town art space - the contemporary pieces on rotation tend toward the thoughtful rather than the showy, and there's usually something by a Welsh artist worth your time.

It's a single room, maybe two if you're being generous, so you'll spend twenty minutes here max unless you're genuinely into the exhibition. The staff know their stuff and won't bore you with a sales pitch if you're just passing through. Worth a look if you're staying at Cambrian Mountains Glamping and Camping nearby and fancy a proper walk into town, but don't reroute your holiday for it.

Tregaron itself is the draw - proper mountain town, good pubs, and the kind of place where you can still find conversations happening in Welsh. The gallery sits within walking distance of the high street, so pair it with lunch and a browse of the local bookshops if you've got an afternoon to kill. The surrounding countryside is the real attraction though. You're at the edge of the Cambrian Mountains here, and the walking is excellent.

Bring cash. Small galleries like this often don't have card machines, and hours can be a bit fluid depending on season. Best visited mid-morning when you've got the light and fewer chance meetings with tour groups.
