Oldham Town Centre (High Street)

Oldham's High Street has seen better days, if we're being honest. What you get now is a fairly standard Northern town centre with the usual charity shops, pound stores, and a handful of independent cafes trying their best. The Victorian architecture is still there if you look up - proper red-brick facades and some genuinely handsome stonework that speaks to when this place mattered as a textile hub.

Walking the length of it takes maybe twenty minutes without stopping. There's a decent market hall if you catch it on a market day, and the Oldham Gallery sits right here too, which is worth ducking into for an hour if you're interested in local art and industrial heritage. The pedestrianised section feels a bit tired, truth be told, and on a grey Lancashire afternoon it can feel properly melancholy.

Honestly, this isn't somewhere you'd drive from Manchester specifically to see. But if you're staying at Dovestone Holiday Park just down the road - and it's excellent, by the way - then popping into town for a browse and lunch is a reasonable half-day outing. The pubs are decent enough, and locals are friendly. Families with young kids won't find much to grip them, but if you're into town planning, industrial history, or just getting a feel for proper Northern England away from the tourist-heavy bits, there's something quietly authentic about it. Go with low expectations and you might actually enjoy it.
