Oldhall Bank

The walk up Oldhall Bank is one of those climbs that feels properly rewarding once you've crested it. You're looking at a straightforward ascent from the Presteigne area - nothing technical, but it does require actual legwork. The views across Mid Wales open up gradually as you gain height, and on a clear day the prospect stretches far enough to make the huffing worthwhile.

What you get is moorland and open hilltop with decent 360-degree visibility. It's the kind of walk that appeals to anyone who likes a bit of exertion without needing scrambling experience. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the steady climb tedious unless they're keen walkers already. Allow a couple of hours return from the base, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

Going mid-week or early morning beats the weekend rush - you'll have the place largely to yourself. Spring and early autumn are best; summer can mean overcast conditions that rob the views of their punch.

If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Hush Hush Glamping or Presteigne Holiday Park are both excellent - this makes a solid morning or afternoon outing without needing to drive far. It slots nicely into a week exploring the Powys hills and dales. The climb is genuine enough to feel like you've done something, but accessible enough that you won't spend the whole walk regretting it.
