Glôg Hill

The walk up Glôg Hill from Presteigne takes you through proper Mid Wales countryside - moorland and rough grass that feels genuinely remote even though you're barely three miles from town. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but the views across Powys open up as you gain height, and on a clear day you can see for miles across the rolling hills. The summit itself is fairly modest - no dramatic cairn or trig point, just the sense of being on top of something.

This is one for walkers rather than casual visitors. You'll want proper footwear and you're looking at around two hours round trip depending on fitness. There's no café, no facilities, nothing twee about it. That's partly the appeal. If you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Presteigne Holiday Park is closest at just over five miles away - it makes a decent afternoon outing when the weather's decent. Families with young children might find it a bit of a slog for limited payoff, but teenagers and actual walkers will appreciate the lack of crowds and the genuine sense of getting away from things.

Go early or late in the day if you want the light to work properly for photography. In poor weather it's thoroughly unrewarding. Free to visit, naturally, as there's nothing to pay - you simply park near Presteigne and head out. The real charm here is how unfussy it all is.
