Graig Hill

Graig Hill rises out of the Powys landscape like something you've stumbled upon by accident - which, frankly, is how most people find it. This isn't a honeypot peak with a visitor centre or marked trails; it's a proper walk that rewards you with views across Mid Wales that justify every bit of effort.

The hill itself is manageable without specialist gear, though the approach from Presteigne takes concentration. You're looking at rough moorland underfoot, exposed in bad weather, and the kind of views that stretch for miles when conditions allow. On a clear day the Brecon Beacons pull your eye south, and the farming valleys around Presteigne spread out below like a map someone's left open on the floor.

Walkers make up the obvious crowd here - anyone after a proper hill walk without the crowds you'd get at more famous peaks. It's not a quick twenty-minute family stroll, though. Budget a good half-day if you're exploring properly, more if you're heading up from one of the nearby parks like Rockbridge or Hush Hush Glamping.

There's no admission fee, no facilities, no nonsense. Bring a map, check the weather forecast properly, and wear something waterproof. The moorland can turn boggy, and mobile signal can be patchy. It fits well into a broader walking trip around the area - combining it with lower-level routes through the Presteigne valleys gives you decent variety without driving between sites constantly.
