Old Plantation

Old Plantation is a proper woodland walk just outside Keswick, the sort of place locals know but tourists often miss. You're walking through mixed forest here - older conifers mixed with broadleaves - and the canopy gets thick enough that even on wet days it stays relatively dry underfoot. The trails meander without much drama, which is exactly the point. There's no summit to bag, no waterfall to photograph, just trees and the gentle sound of the forest doing its thing.

Walkers will find it a solid two-hour outing if you take time to explore the main paths, though you can easily do it in less. The terrain is moderate - nothing steep - which means families with older kids won't struggle, and the lack of crowds makes it genuinely peaceful. You'll spot patches of bluebells in spring if you time it right. It's not a destination in itself, mind you. This is the sort of walk you do while staying at one of the nearby campsites - Kestrel Lodge is barely two and a half miles away, or Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club at three and a half if you want to be closer to town amenities.

Go early in the day or midweek if you can. Weekends see more foot traffic, and the narrow paths lose their charm when you're dodging other walkers. It won't blow your mind, but it's proper woodland walking without the Lake District's overcrowded Catbells syndrome. Worth an afternoon.
