Old Limekiln

Head down to the waterfront near Brixham and you'll spot the Old Limekiln - a proper relic of the days when limestone was burned here to produce lime for mortar and fertiliser. It's not much to look at on first glance, just a sturdy stone structure that's been left to weather the coastal elements, but it tells you something real about how this stretch of Devon actually worked before tourism took over.

The site itself is free to wander around, and there's no entrance fee or formal opening hours to worry about - you can rock up whenever. It won't keep you long; fifteen minutes is realistic unless you're the type who gets genuinely absorbed in industrial archaeology. Kids might find the old stonework interesting enough for a quick look, though it's more of a "spot it and move on" affair than a destination in itself.

What makes it worth the detour is the location. Brixham's got proper charm - working fishing harbour, fish and chip shops that know what they're doing, and enough maritime heritage to spend a decent afternoon exploring. If you're staying at South Bay Holiday Park or Waterside Holiday Park, the limekiln is basically on your doorstep. Pair it with a wander along the seafront and you've got a solid couple of hours sorted. It's the sort of thing that rewards actual curiosity about how places function rather than Instagram appeal, which is fair enough.
